All serious artists and photographers have a lot of mat boards laying around their home or studio. Whether these mat boards are pre-cut or need a little manipulation by the hands of a professional, every artist and photographer know exactly how to best use these mat boards. So when you have an excess amount of scrap mat board, or too many mat boards to use, what do you do with them? Thankfully artists and photographers are incredibly crafty and can use mat boards in a variety of different ways aside from photographs and artwork.
Start utilizing those mat board scraps, clean out your mat board drawer, and repurpose the mat boards you already own. Here is a list of unconventional and alternative uses for mat boards:
- Turn it into a chalkboard photo mat: Grab a can of chalkboard spray paint, give the mat board a few layers, let dry, and have fun!
- Forget the frames: Vintage, industrial, and rustic are both taking over art work. Throw the frame aside and use a mat board as a simple, yet elegant, frame that works well in a rustic or as an artistic touch to that industrial room in your home.
- Create gorgeous wall art: Mat boards are great to repurpose as wall art. Since mat boards are thick, they are the perfect medium to cut out large letters or shapes. Once they are painted you will never know they were once mat board.
- Create a cake stand or cupcake stand in a pinch: Displaying baked goods is easier than ever with a DIY mat board cake or cupcake stand. The thick nature of mat board makes it perfect as a repurposed stand.
